The Keepers of the Tartan
Andrew Seevers
Scottish music has been the defining thread of my life. As a dedicated bagpiper, I’ve had the privilege of playing with several competitive pipe bands and currently serve as Pipe Major for Madison Pipes & Drums. Beyond the pipe band world, I also play with the local Scottish traditional music group, Lochanside. I am also a graduate of the University of St Andrews in Scotland.
My involvement with the St. Andrew’s Society comes from a deep desire to build community. Through the St Andrews Society, I aim to create a small but meaningful piece of Scotland here in our city: a place where people who share this passion can connect, celebrate, and keep these traditions alive for future generations.

Ainsley Steen
Born in southern Ontario, childhood summers for Ainsley were filled with bagpipes. At the time, bagpipes didn’t connect her to her heritage, they were just cool. In college, Ainsley studied abroad in Edinburgh and started studying Scottish folk lore, ultimately returning to Edinburgh for a master’s degree. Here, she attended ceilidhs, learned about Scottish history, developed a love of tartans, and traveled the country. Years later, Ainsley went all in and learned the pipes for herself. Only then did she realize that so many of the Scottish arts she loves are going extinct. She joined the St. Andrew’s Society to help keep these traditions alive and foster a love of the Scottish arts in Madison.

In a weird way my love of all things Scottish started with my Irish heritage. My son was in competitive Irish dance and I was secretary along with being the chair of several committees on the Fitchburg Days festival. Through those we attended Highland Games and music festivals all around. I have always LOVED bagpipes. So naturally I eventually joined Madison Pipes and Drums, as a drummer. There I was introduced to members of the St Andrews Society. I attended my first ceilidh and was hooked! More reasons to see men in kilts! I love introducing people to new experiences and seeing the pure joy our events bring people. I’m most excited about seeing the growth and expansion of events St Andrews provides to the community.

While I may not be Scottish by birth, a life-changing study abroad trip left me with a husband, a kilt obsession, and a deep love for all things Scottish. I helped found the St. Andrew’s Society of Madison to create a welcoming space where the 608 can experience the same warmth and heritage that captured my heart

I enjoy participation in the Saint Andrews Society’s organized cultural events and celebrations, such as traditional Scottish music, dance, and food which help preserve and share Scottish traditions. These events and being a member of the board have provided me with the opportunity to socialize and form lasting friendships with others who appreciate Scottish culture.
